Dear Mr Green,

I am writing to inform you of my opinion that Year 5 should attend a residential trip to the Maldives. In my letter I will highlight three key reasons I believe it will be beneficial for my year group; these benefits include (but are not limited to) promoting positive mental health, the strengthening of friendships and of course the fact that the trip would be educational.

Firstly, it is a proven fact that the ocean has a positive impact on an individual’s mental health. Did you know that the sound of waves can help you achieve a meditative state, which is proven to heal and strengthen your brain? Also, the turquoise colours of the ocean can convey a sense of calmness. Mental Health is such a huge concern in the youth of today; a trip to the magnificent Maldives before we commence Year 6 will set us in good stead for the pressures we will face in our final year of primary school.

Secondly, a trip to the Maldives will have a positive effect on our social relations. We can spend time with one another outside of our usual context; this can help to break down any existing barriers and strengthen our friendships. Travelling is an extraordinary opportunity and this would be a trip we would remember and cherish for the rest of our lives – a truly unique bonding experience!

Finally, a trip to the Maldives would, of course, be educational! The Maldives is an ocean-locked nation and there is an incredible diversity of sea life that could be studied as part of our biology curriculum. Just imagine – numerous corals and an abundance of fish species (over 2000!) to study.

To conclude I would like to assure you that the school would not need to contribute to the cost of this trip. Year 5 have already discussed some ideas for fundraising events and contrary to what you may have heard or read about the Maldives being an expensive place to visit, you can get some great deals this time of year.

I would be extremely grateful if you would take my proposal into serious consideration.

Yours hopefully

Sam O’Brien
