Learning By Topic KS2: Motocross and English

Theme/Spelling words: circuit, enclosed, championship, competition, annual, veterans, national, manufacture, motorcycle, customise.

List spellings in alphabetical order, write synonyms and antonyms for words (where appropriate), create a crossword puzzle for your theme words, write your theme words in sentences or use all of them in a short story.

Write sentences about Motocross that includes the use of similes, metaphors, alliteration and personification.

List 10 questions you would ask your favourite Motocross rider if you got the opportunity to meet them.  Next watch some interviews with them on you tube and try and write down some answers for your questions (how you think/know they would answer the question). Now have some fun and voice/record or film the interview – getting a family member to be one of the voices OR changing the tone of your voice between characters! Have fun with it! Write an acrostic poem with the word ‘Motocross’.

Do you think there is a suitable place in your local community for a new Motocross track? Write a letter to your local Councillor to persuade them it is a good idea; explain how it could benefit the community. (Cross Curricular: PSHE, Genre of writing: Persuasive)

How do you think the winner of a championship feels compared to the rider that comes in last place? List some adjectives to describe the feelings of both riders. Now compare these two lists – they are probably quite the opposite of each other! How do you think the rider who came in last place picks themselves back up from their disappointment? (Cross Curricular: PHSE, Genre of writing: Discussion)

Watch a past Motocross Championship (perhaps on you tube). Now imagine you are a sport journalist and you need to write a newspaper article about what you just witnessed. Remember to include a catchy headline! (Genre of writing:  Factual Recount)
