Learning By Topic KS1: The Library and Mathematics

If people return their library items late there is an overdue fee. For children’s books the fee is 5 pence per day. If you returned a book a week late, how much would you have to pay? What if it was a fortnight late?

The overdue fee for adult books is 25 pence a day. If you returned a book a week late, how much would you have to pay? Extension: What if it was a fortnight late?

Is there an area of maths that you find challenging? See if you can borrow a resource from the library that will help you with this maths topic.

Over a week keep a record of how many minutes you read each day. Then represent this data on a bar graph. Which day did you read the most? Which day did you read the least? What is the difference between these two times? Is there anything else you notice about your graph?

Take a ruler to the library and measure the largest book you can find and the smallest book you can find (in centimetres). Estimate before you measure.

Create an image of a librarian using 2D shapes. What 2D shapes have you used? Can you list/label the properties for each shape e.g. number of sides and corners?
